Imphal

Capital of Manipur state on the Manipur River, India; population (2001) 217,300. It is a communications and trade centre (tobacco, sugar, fruit). Imphal was besieged between March and June 1944, when Japan invaded Assam, but held out with the help of supplies dropped by air.
