Jasper National Park

National park in the Rocky Mountains, northern Alberta, Canada; area 10,878 sq km/4,200 sq mi. It is located 311 km/193 mi west of Edmonton, and was established in 1907. The park, with its alpine scenery, glaciers, and wildlife (including grizzly bear, elk, moose, and mountain goat), is much used for skiing, and the town of Jasper, about 1,075 m/3,527 ft above sea level, is a tourist centre. Mount Columbia, Alberta's highest mountain at 3,747 m/12,293 ft, is situated in the park.

Jasper Park is the biggest national park in Canada's Rocky Mountains, attracting around 1.8 million visitors a year. It was named after Jasper Hawes, trader and interpreter with the North-West Company, who built a trading post here about 1811.
