Kenmare

Market town in County Kerry, Republic of Ireland, at the head of a sea inlet known as Kenmare River; population (2002) 1,850. Situated at the southern end of the Ring of Kerry, Kenmare is a popular tourist centre. It produces handmade lace.

Kenmare was founded in 1670 by William Petty (1623–1687), Oliver Cromwell's surveyor general in Ireland, to support his mining developments nearby. The town's two main streets, which intersect each other in a distinctive X-shape, were laid out by the 1st Marquess of Landsdowne in 1775. Cromwell's Fort, a 17th-century castle, is situated close to the centre of the town. Nearby are the ruins of Dunkerron Castle (2 km/1 mi west), Cappanacushy Castle (8 km/5 mi west-southwest), and Dromore Castle (10 km/7 mi west-southwest).
