Indore

City in Madhya Pradesh, India, lying on the Sarasvati River, 550 km/340 mi northeast of Mumbai (formerly Bombay); population (2001) 1,597,400. A former capital of the princely state of Indore, it now produces cotton, chemicals, and furniture. It is a centre for Hindustani classical music.

It was the first city to open its temples, schools and public wells to the Harijan (untouchables) in support of Mahatma Gandhi's campaign against caste discrimination.
