UK daily quality newspaper established in 1986 to compete with The Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian. Owned by the Mirror Group Consortium, the paper aims to be politically independent. Its circulation in 1998 was over 250,000. A sister paper, The Independent on Sunday, was established in 1990 and had a circulation of over 270,000 in 1998.
