Independent Television Commission

Public body responsible for licensing and regulating commercial television services in the UK, including ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5, as well as teletext and a number of cable and satellite services. It is not responsible for licensing S4C, the fourth Welsh channel. Its duties include implementing a code of practice, ensuring adequate quality of services, reporting on complaints, and ensuring competition. It is funded by payments from its licensees; it was paid £315 million in 1995. Members of the Commission are appointed by the government.

Britain's Independent Television Commission has banned a Microsoft X-Box ad after 135 viewers complained about the content.
Noted for its impartiality, Independent Television Commission (ITC) research consistently shows it to be more trusted the BBC News or ITN, the award-winning channel was awarded a BAFTA in both 2002 and 2003 and was named 'News Channel of The Year' by the Royal Television Society (RTS) for the second consecutive year in 2003.
A former chairman of the UK's Cable Communications Association, Bates has represented the cable industry before the Independent Television Commission, Select Committees of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons, the Department of Trade and Industry and OFTEL, the telecommunications watchdog.
