India Acts

    0.04 sec.

India Acts

Legislation passed in 1858, 1919, and 1935 which formed the basis of British rule in India until independence in 1947. The 1858 Act abolished the administrative functions of the British East India Company, replacing them with direct rule from London. The 1919 Act increased Indian participation at local and provincial levels but did not meet nationalist demands for complete internal self-government (Montagu-Chelmsford reforms). The 1935 Act outlined a federal structure but was never implemented.
