Indianapolis Raceway

US motor-sport circuit, built in 1909 following the success of Brooklands in the UK. The Indianapolis 500 is staged here at the end of May each year as part of the Memorial Day weekend. It staged a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time in the year 2000.

The circuit is 2.6 mi/4.2 km long and is rectangular with the four corners joined at slightly banked corners. The original circuit was made out of bricks, hence its nickname the ‘Brickyard’. The venue has a total spectator capacity of more than 400,000, making it the largest sporting facility in the world.
