Indianola

City and seat of Warren County, Iowa, 24 km/15 mi south of Des Moines; population (1990) 11,300. Indianola has grain elevators and feed mills, and manufactures brooms and metal products.

The first courthouse was an old school, the second lasted from 1868 until 1938, when the third and current courthouse was built. Indianola is the site of Simpson College (founded 1860), and of the National Balloon Museum. The US National Hot Air Balloon Championships are held there every August. Lake Ahquabi State Park lies 8 km/5 mi to the south.

Indianola

City and seat of Sunflower County, in west-central Mississippi; population (1990) 11,800. Indianola stands in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, on the Sunflower River, 35 km/22 mi east-northeast of Greenville. Settled before the Civil War, it is a cotton-country market town, with processing plants. There are also catfish farms here, as well as a vineyard and winery.
