Indio

City in Riverside County, southern California; population (1990) 36,800. The city is situated in the desert of the Coachella Valley, 29 km/18 mi southeast of Palm Springs. It was established in 1876 as a railway town, and is now a growing residential community.

Indio is a trade centre for a region irrigated by the Coachella Main Canal (or ‘All-American Canal’), which produces dates, citrus fruit, and other crops.
