indirect cost

indirect cost

Or semi-variable cost in business studies, cost which changes as output changes, but not in direct proportion. For example, the costs of running an office are indirect costs for a manufacturing company. Day-to-day changes in output in the factory will not affect office costs. However, a permanent 20% increase in output might lead to a need for more office staff and hence higher indirect costs.
