induced current

Enlarge picture
Movement of a magnet in a coil of wire induces a current.

Electric current that appears in a closed circuit when there is relative movement of its conductor in a magnetic field. The effect is known as the dynamo effect, and is used in all dynamos and generators to produce electricity. See electromagnetic induction.

The magnitude of the induced current depends upon the rate at which the magnetic flux is cut by the conductor, and its direction is given by Fleming's right-hand rule (see Fleming's rules).
