industrial music

Avant-garde music that uses electronic distortion, metal percussion, and industrial tools to achieve deafening, discordant effects, often combined with imagery intended to shock or disgust. Leading industrial bands have included Throbbing Gristle (formed in 1976 in the UK), Einstürzende Neubauten (formed in 1980 in Germany), and Non (formed early 1980s in the USA). The music is distributed chiefly on independent (indie) labels and through alternative networks.
