Industrial Light & Magic

Company that creates special effects for films and which has broken new ground in computer animation techniques (see animation, computer). ILM was set up in 1975 by US director George Lucas to create special effects for his Star Wars films, and is based in San Rafael, California, USA.

The company's best-known computer-generated effects include the sea creature in The Abyss (1990), the liquid-metal man in Terminator 2 (1991), the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (1993), and the computer generated character Jar-Jar Binks in Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (1999).
