spasm

In medicine, a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle or of a hollow organ with a muscular wall.

A tonic spasm describes a spasm in which the contraction persists for some time followed by sudden or gradual relaxation, whilst clonic spasm is characterized by a series of contractions and relaxations of the muscle. Cramps are spasms that affect the limbs and colic describes spasms of the stomach and intestinal walls.
