shanty town![]() The small rural shanty town of Ndevana, in Eastern Cape, South Africa. In countries undergoing rapid development, some communities continue to face low standards in housing and other life essentials. In rural areas the problem of poverty is particularly intense. There are few jobs nearby, as environmental factors limit the prospects for farming, so the inhabitants have to travel far to find employment.

| Population estimates for the area range from 400,000 to over 600,000, making Kibera the densest and most populous of Nairobi's nearly 200 informal settlements or "slums. Life for the urban poor is unpredictable: piped water is unreliable, informal settlements are susceptible to flooding, illness and death may affect people at any time, and eviction, crime and violence are prevalent. In this city, over 60 per cent of the population lives in informal settlements with buildings up to 14 storeys high in a city with only 1 square metre of open space per person (each Londoner, by contrast, has access to 50 times that amount). |
