Ingelheim am Rhein

Town in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, 18 km/11 mi west of Mainz; population (1994) 21,200. Ingelheim is the centre of a wine-producing district specializing in red wines. The upper town (Oberingelheim) has an ancient fortress and a medieval church, while the lower town (Niederingelheim) contains the remains of a palace of Charlemagne.
