Inglewood

City in Los Angeles County, southwestern California; population (1990) 109,600. Inglewood is situated 13 km/8 mi south of downtown Los Angeles, and 8 km/5 mi east of the Pacific Ocean. It is the location of the Forum, the leading sports arena in the Los Angeles area.

Founded in 1873, Inglewood was formed from parts of two Spanish ranchos. The area produces oil, furniture, metal products, cosmetics, enamelware, aircraft, and aircraft parts. Los Angeles International Airport lies immediately to the west of the city. The Forum seats 18,000, and is home to the Lakers (basketball) and Kings (hockey) teams, as well as hosting other sports and entertainments. Thoroughbred and harness racing takes place at Hollywood Park. Inglewood is also the site of Northrop University (founded 1942).
