Ingraham, Hubert

    0.01 sec.

Ingraham, Hubert (Alexander) (1947– )

Bahamian politician, prime minister 1992–2002. A minister of housing and social services in Lynden Pindling's Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) administration, he was dismissed from the cabinet in 1984 and from the PLP in 1986 after speaking out against corruption. He was elected as an independent in 1987, and became leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) in 1990. Campaigning on an anti-corruption platform, Ingraham led the FNM to a stunning victory in 1992, ending 25 years of rule by Pindling. His government was successful in attracting inward foreign investment, promoted political decentralization, and introduced a minimum wage. It secured re-election in 1997.

Ingraham trained and worked as a lawyer and joined the ruling PLP in the 1970s, being elected to the House of Assembly in 1977, and appointed minister in 1982.
