inhalant

In medicine, formulation of a drug that is designed to deliver it directly to the lungs. Traditional inhalants involve the dispersion of the drug in hot water and inhalation of the steam. Drugs can be inhaled from aerosols that have been developed for the treatment of asthma.

A national policy framework on inhalant abuse recently endorsed by the Australian Ministerial Council on Drug Strategy concludes that it is inappropriate to provide young people who have not already initiated inhalant use with information about possible use of these products as drugs, and therefore that the current Australian approach should be maintained (National Inhalant Abuse Taskforce 2006).
