Inhambane

Seaport and administrative centre of Inhambane province, on the southeast coast of Mozambique, 370 km/231 mi northeast of Maputo; population (1997) 54,200, (2007 calc) 79,300. The industries are mainly dependent on the agriculture of the region, and include sugar-milling, soap-making, and the processing of coconuts, groundnuts, and cashews. It is a railway terminus, whose links are mainly with the southern region of Mozambique.

Inhambane was established in 1534 by Portuguese explorers.
