Inland Sea

Arm of the Pacific Ocean, 390 km/240 mi long, greatest width 70 km/43 mi, almost enclosed by the Japanese islands of Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Its chief port is Hiroshima, and it is an important shipping route. It has about 300 small islands. Although comparatively shallow, the Inland Sea has a large tidal range.

The growth in sea traffic and factory development on its shores has caused pollution and damaged the fine coastal scenery.
