Innisfail

Town in Queensland, Australia, 89 km/55 mi south of Cairns and 1,617 km/1,005 mi north of Brisbane; population (1996) 8,987. It situated on the River Johnstone in the area of heaviest rainfall in Australia, with an annual average rainfall of 3,553 mm/140 in. It is the centre of a sugar-cane growing district, and a large sugar-exporting port. The Innisfail region also produces pawpaws, bananas, rare fruits tea, and beef cattle.
