Interlaken

Chief town of the Bernese Alps, Switzerland, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Bern; population (2000) 15,000. Situated an altitude of 570 m/1,870 ft, it lies on the River Aar between lakes Brienz and Thun. Industries include tourism, watchmaking, and the production of textiles. Its main street, the Hoheweg, commands a fine view of the Jungfrau Mountain. The site was first occupied in 1130 by a monastery, which was suppressed in 1528.

Indeed, from Lucerne to Interlaken we had the spectacle, among other scenery, of an unbroken procession of fruit-peddlers and tourists carriages.
This plan they punctually fulfilled, spending July at Interlaken and Grindelwald, and August at a little place called Etretat, on the Normandy coast, which some one had recommended as quaint and quiet.
For a charming week we wandered up the Valley of the Rhone, and then, branching off at Leuk, we made our way over the Gemmi Pass, still deep in snow, and so, by way of Interlaken, to Meiringen.
