After years of physical decline and several attempts to cut its funding, the venerable International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spacecraft has finally fallen under the budget ax. Analyzing observations by the International Ultraviolet Explorer in late August and early September, the researchers find that Hale-Bopp flings out an enormous amount of dust, perhaps more than any other known comet. Melissa McGrath of the Space Telescope Science Institute and her colleagues report that Io's atmosphere extends about 900 kilometers above the surface, about one-eighth the maximum height inferred by another orbiting instrument, the International Ultraviolet Explorer. |
