May Day

First day of May. In many countries it is a national holiday in honour of labour; see also Labour Day.

Traditionally the first day of summer, in parts of England it is still celebrated as a pre-Christian magical rite; for example, the dance around the maypole (an ancient fertility symbol).

Evo Morales announced the decree at a rally to mark international workers' day on Friday, and ordered troops to take control of the company's operations.
Also known as International Workers' Day, the occasion commemorates the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886, when Chicago police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight hour day, killing a dozen demonstrators.
