streaming media

Method of transferring data as a continuous stream. Although the potential to view video and audio over the Internet exists, the majority of users' computers are not powerful enough for, or the bandwidth is insufficient to permit, the practicable download of large media files. Instead, the user loads on their computer a software program, called a plug-in, that allows them to download video and audio data in a stream over a period of time, which is then interpreted and viewed through the plug-in. Popular streaming media formats include Apple's Quicktime, and RealAudio. In practice, limited bandwidth may still result in a nonsatisfactory viewing or listening experience.
