interpolation

Estimate of a value lying between two known values. For example, it is known that 132 is 169 and 142 is 196. Thus, the square of 13.5 can be interpolated as halfway between 169 and 196, i.e. 182.5 (the exact value is 182.25).

interpolation

Mathematical technique for using two values to calculate intermediate values. It is used in computer graphics to create smooth shadings.

An interpolation formula involves samples of the observed phenomenon and functions depending on the sampling times.
The particular algorithm for these analogue-to-digital conversions is the so-called Nyquist-Shannon interpolation formula, to which Campbell pays overt LED homage in Portrait of a Portrait of Harry Nyquist (2000) and Portrait of a Portrait of Claude Shannon (2000-01), the well-known engineers of sampling theorems.
