The opening Introduction and Allegro by Elgar is often something of an apology, a musical hors d'oeuvre.
The programme opened with Elgar's Welsh choir-inspired Introduction and Allegro which features the composer's trademark broad swell of strings but also passages of pizzicati from a string quartet and a mad dash through rippling semi-quavers to a satisfying final flourish.
So that's the orchestra's most famous national composer and a more than respectful tribute to ours, beginning with Elgar's Introduction and Allegro for strings in a richly evoked reading, the string quartet blending seamlessly into the main string ensemble.
