Inuvik

Town in Inuvik Region, in the extreme northwest of Northwest Territories; population (1991) 3,200. Inuvik is located in the Mackenzie River delta, 115 km/70 mi east of the Yukon border and 190 km/120 mi north of the Arctic Circle.

Planned and laid out in the 1950s, Inuvik is the centre of regional administration, as well as being the commercial and transportation hub of the Mackenzie delta region. The town is a supply base for gas and oil exploration in the Beaufort Sea. It lies at the northeastern end of the Dempster Highway, and is within the Reindeer Grazing Reserve. The region's Inuit, who live both in the town and in the older hamlets of Aklavik (50 km/31 mi west; population 800) and Tuktoyaktuk (113 km/70 mi north-northeast; population 920), produce crafts and clothing and are experienced trappers, sealers, and walrus hunters.
