Inveraray

Former county town and royal burgh in Argyll and Bute unitary authority, Scotland, situated on Loch Fyne, 37 km/23 mi northwest of Greenock; population (2001) 770. A popular tourist centre, the town was originally laid out on a grand scale in 1743 by Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll; it was sited close to Inveraray Castle, his ancestral seat.

The castle, initially constructed in the 15th century as the stronghold of the 1st Earl of Argyll, head of the clan Campbell, was also redesigned in 1745 by the 3rd duke to provide a stately home.
