Invercargill

City on the south coast of South Island, New Zealand, on the Waihopai River; population (2001 est) 49,800. First settled in 1855, the city is the commercial centre of a large area of pastoral farming sheep and dairy cattle. Industries include woollen mills, sawmills, meatpacking, and aluminium-smelting.
