It is predominantly a de-industrializing urban area with more affluent villages on the southern side of the area and low-quality agricultural land away from the coastal plain. Regeneration has been led by high technology.

There are four Sites of Special Scientific Interest and one regional park.

Administrative history

Prior to 1975, the area was part of Renfrewshire.
