Inveresk

Village in East Lothian unitary authority, Scotland, situated near the outflow of the River Esk to the Firth of Forth, approximately 1 km/0.6 mi from the coast, on the western edge of Musselburgh. Coal is mined in the area, and agriculture and sea fishing provide further occupation.

The settlement was preceded by a Roman colony. Two 16th-century battles were fought in the vicinity between the English and the Scottish: Pinkie in 1547 and Carberry Hill in 1567. Alexander (Jupiter) Carlyle, leader of the moderate party in the fledgling Church of Scotland, was minister of the parish of Inveresk 1748-1805.
