inverse video

In computing, a display mode in which images on a display screen are presented as a negative of their normal appearance.

For example, if the computer screen normally displays dark images on a light background, inverse video will change all or part of the screen to a light image on a dark background.

Inverse video is commonly used to highlight parts of a display or to mark out text and pictures that the user wishes the computer to change in some way. For example, the user of a word-processing program might use a pointing device such as a mouse to mark in inverse video a paragraph of text that is to be deleted from the document.
