Ioannina

Town in Greece, capital of Ioannina department, on the shore of Lake Ioannina, about 80 km/50 mi from the sea and 480 m/1,575 ft above sea level, opposite the island of Corfu; population (2001 est) 63,100. It has a tanning and fur-dressing industry.

The town was first mentioned in 859. It was conquered by the Turks in 1430, was the stronghold of Ali Pasha from 1788 until 1822, and was captured by the Greeks in the Balkan Wars in 1913.

It is the seat of an archbishop.
