Iowa City

City in eastern Iowa, USA, on the Iowa River, 25 mi/40 km south of Cedar Rapids and 105 mi/170 km east of Des Moines, seat of Johnson County; population (2000) 62,200. It is a distribution center for the area's agricultural products; other industries include printed matter and building materials.

Iowa City was founded in 1839 and incorporated in 1853. It served as the state capital from 1846 until 1857, when the capital was moved to Des Moines. As county seat, the first courthouse in Iowa City was burnt in 1856, the second lasted from 1857 to 1899, when the present elaborate structure by James Rowson was built.

It is the seat of the University of Iowa (1847). The Old Capitol (1840) is on the university campus. President Herbert C Hoover was born nearby. Attractions include a museum of art and a museum of natural history.
