Iowa Great Lakes

Resort area in Dickinson County, northwestern Iowa. The region lies immediately south of the Minnesota state line, and is centred around four lakes – Spirit, East Okoboji, West Okoboji, and Silver.

The city of Spirit Lake (population (1990) 3,900) stands near the site of an infamous incident involving Sioux Indians and White settlers in the mid-19th century. In March 1857, Sioux warriors massacred 34 men, women, and children who had set up home near the lake.

Since 1992, the region has marketed itself as the ‘Great Lakes Corridor of Opportunity’.
