Iphigénie en Tauride

Title of a number of operas based on Euripedes. The story is a sequel to Iphigénie en Aulide; Iphigénie has been transported to Tauris from the sacrificial altar by Diana. Orestes, Iphigénie's brother, arrives in the barbaric kingdom to return a statue of Diana to Greece. He is captured, but there is a happy ending. The opera by Henri Desmarets and André Campra (libretto by J F Duché and A Danchet) was first produced at the Paris Opéra, France, on 6 May 1704. The opera by Christoph Willibald von Gluck (libretto by N F Guillard) was first produced at the Paris Opéra on 18 May 1779. Niccolò Piccinni's opera (libretto by A C Dubreuil) was first produced at the Paris Opéra on 23 January 1781. See also Ifigenia, L'.
