IpohCapital of Perak state, Peninsular Malaysia; population (2000 est) 566,200. It lies in the Kinta Valley on an alluvial plain rich in tin ores. Tin mining in open pits has been the core industry since the late 19th century. Ipoh is also a commercial centre for nearby rubber plantations. Much of the city's power is provided by hydroelectricity from the Chenderoh dam on the Perak River.

From March through April 2006, an outbreak of CHIKV infection was reported in Bagan Panchor (4[degrees]31'N, 100[degrees]37'E), an isolated coastal town 50 km west of Ipoh, the state capital of Perak, in northwest Malaysia. GDB are collaborating with Norman Foster on the design of the new Petronas University in Ipoh. During 1949-1951 he was a district officer in Ipoh. |
