Irapuato

Town in the centre of the state of Guanajuato in south-central Mexico, 40 km/25 mi south of the town of Guanajuato; population (1995) 412,600. It stands at an altitude of 1,700 m/5,577 ft. The town is the centre of a rich agricultural district. Produce includes strawberries. Other industries include railway workshops and chemical processing. Irapuato is a major junction for road and rail communications.
