Taoiseach

Irish title for the prime minister of the Republic of Ireland. The Taoiseach has broadly similar powers to the UK prime minister.

As the Irish Taoiseach, John Bruton, remarked at the Shamrock Ceremony in the White House this past March 17, "The willingness to take risks, to do things that many of us might have thought foolhardy at the time--like granting a visa to Gerry Adams--has been proven to be right.
Hence the popular Christmas welcome in Dublin for the Downing Street Declaration, signed by British Prime Minister John Major and Irish Taoiseach Albert Reynolds, and designed to produce an IRA ceasefire, talks among all parties including the IRA after three months of non-violence, and, eventually, "peace.
