Irish wolfhound

Breed of hound used in Ireland for many centuries to hunt wolves and other large game. Of massive size (80 cm/32 in upwards) and powerful build, the wolfhound has a shaggy coat in a range of colours – wheaten, grey, brindled, black, red, or white.

In the 19th century the breed was revived when nearly extinct by crossing it with the deerhound.
