Iron Gate

Narrow gorge, interrupted by rapids, in Romania. A hydroelectric scheme undertaken between 1964 and 1970 by Romania and Yugoslavia transformed this section of the River Danube into a lake 145 km/90 mi long and eliminated the rapids as a navigation hazard. Before flooding, in 1965, an archaeological survey revealed Europe's oldest urban settlement, Lepenski Vir.
