Ironton

City and seat of Lawrence County, in south-central Ohio; population (2000) 11,200. Ironton is situated on the Ohio River where it forms the border with Kentucky, 35 km/22 mi southeast of Portsmouth.

Once the centre of the pig-iron industry in southern Ohio, Ironton was founded in 1848 by furnace operators as a manufacturing and shipping centre. Nowadays, its principal manufactures are metal castings, fabricated metals, coke, industrial chemicals, and plastics.
