Irrawaddy

Chief river of Myanmar (Burma), flowing roughly north–south for 2,090 km/1,300 mi across the centre of the country into the Bay of Bengal. Its sources are the Mali and N'mai rivers; its chief tributaries are the Chindwin and Shweli.

Irrawaddy

Division of western Myanmar; area 35,139 sq km/13,567 sq mi; population (1994 est) 6,107,000. The capital is Pathein. It is a rice-growing region, covering the whole of the Irrawaddy delta.

Marine biologist Piya, of Indian descent but American and without knowledge of any Indian language, arrives to study a shrinking population of Irrawaddy, or river dolphins.
The last few times that I've been there, I've seen maybe two Gangetic dolphins; I haven't seen any Orcaellae or Irrawaddy dolphins.
The image was brought from the Mandalay region, where it was quarried, down the Irrawaddy River to its present resting site.
