irrigationArtificial water supply for dry agricultural areas by means of dams and channels. Drawbacks are that it tends to concentrate salts at the surface, ultimately causing soil infertility, and that rich river silt is retained at dams, to the impoverishment of the land and fisheries below them. Irrigation has been practised for thousands of years, in Eurasia as well as the Americas.
