Irvine

City in Orange County, southwestern California, 64 km/40 mi southeast of Los Angeles; population (1990) 110,300. A new town, it was created in the 1970s as a planned community, and continues to expand rapidly.

The city of Irvine was established on the site of Irvine Ranch, a large former rancho. Its development centred around the new campus of the University of California at Irvine (1964); this now incorporates industrial and office complexes in aerospace, biotechnology, finance, electronics, automotive research, fashion, and other sectors. Christ College Irvine was also founded here in 1972. The outdoor Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre seats 15,000 people for concerts and other events.
