Irving, Henry (1838–1905)English actor. He established his reputation from 1871, chiefly at the Lyceum Theatre in London, where he became manager in 1878. He staged a series of successful Shakespearean productions, including Romeo and Juliet (1882), with himself and Ellen Terry playing the leading roles. He was the first actor to be knighted, in 1895.
