Irving

City in Dallas County, northeastern Texas; population (1990) 155,000. Irving lies on the northwestern outskirts of Dallas, 14 km/9 mi northwest of the city centre, and is adjacent to the easternmost suburbs of Fort Worth.

Irving was a small agricultural community until the mid-20th century (its population in 1950 was under 2,600), but is now one of the largest industrial, commercial, and residential communities in the Metroplex area. Its diverse industries manufacture processed foods, concrete and asphalt, wallboard, aluminum, chemicals, inks, graphite, insecticides, and paints. The huge Las Colinas business complex (covering some 49 sq km/19 sq mi) is home to many of the city's financial, advertising, and corporate offices. Irving is also the site of the University of Dallas (founded 1956) and of North Lake College (1977). The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is situated to the northwest, and Texas Stadium (1971), the 65,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys football team, is located in the city.
